We are at the intersection of a diehard community of Backyard Sports evangelists pushing the original games past their expiration date, a publishing company relaunching a brand with a new cartoon, and a game studio that has the monumental task of bringing a game from 25 years ago back to the future.
This week, the Reddit Backyard Baseball League started its 15th season in about 8 or so years. This league started with just a few people who found each other on Reddit and wanted to create a league experience together. It has continued year after year, with coaches clamoring for more. The league has evolved over the 15 seasons with modding, organizational bots, drafting analytics, and rule changes. Although the name is "Reddit" Backyard Baseball League, 99% of the organization and community is on Discord. The most recent season features 10 custom players, pro players from 2003 being added to 2001, custom team logos, and so much more.
The Backyard Baseball Online League, hosted by the BackyardSports.Online project, is winding down Season 7 as the playoffs begin. Activity slows down between seasons for BBOL as the RBBL takes center stage. This is the time to take a break from the long season and wait for the Gauntlet tournament, which will decide where coaches are placed for next season.
Playground Productions is traveling across the USA to show off the new Backyard Baseball game. They are visiting ballparks and conventions like Giants' Oracle Park and PAX East. By taking this show on the road, they are able to bring the game to their fanbase and interact with them directly. Sneak peeks, demos, and trailers are being shared across social media. The switch from 2D to 3D has some longtime fans disappointed, but most understand why the decision was made. This is a game that needs to be brought back for new sports fans and gamers, and it would be a bonus if the game is enjoyable for longtime players like me.
Mega Cat Studios has been working on the newest release of Backyard Baseball after re-releasing five of the original games in 2024/2025. The games required updates to be accessible on many different platforms and to avoid licensing issues. Now, the franchise is jumping into a third dimension using the Unity 3D engine, and reactions have been mostly positive. The 3D versions of these characters and fields are living up to the charm of the old games that we love and remember. After the studio turnover of Backyard Sports in the mid-2000s, the characters changed dramatically, which turned fans away from the franchise.
The resurgence of the franchise in sports and gaming culture has been unprecedented. Rarely has a game or character been brought back to life in the same way that Pablo Sanchez and Backyard Sports have. What was once a "lost" franchise has now grown roots once more and taken hold of fans again.
