From the desk of Commisioner FerbFletcher
As we begin our offseason, I’m so excited to announce that everything in BFOL is about to change! A huge thank you to the folks (see bottom) way smarter than me doing a ton of incredible work. What is happening?
We have several new mods being incorporated into OG Backyard Football This modded version will be the version we use in future BFOL seasons, and features many new improvements including:
- Generic kids are here! We are no longer bound to 38 backyard kids. There are now over 140 kids that you can play with, and we’re weighing whether to expand that even further. This means BFOL seasons will now have a traditional draft at the start of the season, and everyone will have unique rosters. And now Pete isn’t the only playable kid with 100 speed!
- Saved rosters having so many kids to pick from is great, but that’s an enormous set of bleachers! Since everyone’s teams will stay the same the whole season, our modders have made it so your BFOL roster can be saved and you can bypass the draft when you play your season games (similar to BBOL). You can set this roster in-game from the main online menu, just like your playbooks. Start a game from Capital Hill to use saved rosters.
- Auto-save to recover from crashes no one likes crashes, but now when you return to your game, your settings are saved and stored, and you’ll automatically pick up from where you crashed. You’ll bypass re-drafting, as well as the headaches of trying to get back to the same down/distance/time/etc. Use the Vespucci Park lobby to resume an existing game.
- Expanded playbooks there's now one additional page available, replacing the power-up page - this adds a new layer of scheme/strategy to your BFOL play calling - you no longer have to recycle the same twelve plays if you don’t want to.
- Expanded fields in addition to the five already-selectable fields, the following previously-not-selectable fields are now available: Parks Department Field No. 3, Skyway Municipal Park, P.S. 132, Metro Civic Playfield, Highland Greens, Tech State U., and King-Size Dome
- Easier rule enforcement BFOL rules like the 3-second hike delay and the 25-yard-line-of-scrimmage rule are baked into the mods, so you won’t be able to quick snap even if you try, and your players can’t run >25 yards behind the LOS.
- Reliable stats measurement/storage since crashes aren’t a big deal anymore, we’re working on an easier way to capture and log stats, which means we can now meaningfully track stats across players (and coaches) in BFOL.

When is this happening? BFOL S6 will be the first BFOL season that uses this modded version, but in the meantime, we need beta testers! Let us know if you’re interested in being a beta tester, and we’ll assign the role to you, and direct you to our new # beta-testing thread, where feedback can be in one place, and everyone can be notified when new mod updates are released. Who is this for?The mods will be mandatory for anyone playing in S6 and beyond, but they make the gameplay experience better for everyone, regardless of your BFOL involvement. We’d love as many beta testers as we can get in the meantime, but no one needs to use this until S6 begins (a very long time from now). This is a great way to get your BFOL fix during a months-long offseason (and familiarize yourself with the new features before the games start to count).Keep in mind: if you’re scrimmaging online, you need to have the same mods/versions of mods as your opponent. Make sure you’re both on the same page with that.
We're so excited to kick off this new era of BFOL! To reiterate: I’m just the messenger - I didn’t do any of this - please thank:Saystafe and JadoM for generics/playbooks/fieldsSaystafe for auto-crash-recovery/saved rostersBBALL - roster/statistician extraordinaire
